How to Make Sweetheart Popcorn
It’s really easy to make this Valentine’s Day snack mix! Grab the kids and have them help with this easy recipe.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- Popped popcorn
- White chocolate baking chips
- Vegetable shortening (or coconut oil)
- Pink candy melts
- Red candy melts
- Valentine’s Day sprinkles
How to Make It:
Spread the popcorn. First, you’ll need your popped popcorn. If you want to add any salt or butter ahead of time, go ahead and do that now–but it isn’t really necessary.
Spread the popcorn out onto a couple of baking sheets lined with wax paper.
Melt the white chocolate. Next, you’ll microwave the white chocolate chips along with some vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) in a microwave-safe large bowl for one minute, followed by 15-second intervals, stirring in between intervals until smooth.
Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn, tossing to coat. Spread back out over the baking sheet to cool.
Melt pink and red candy melts. Microwave the pink candy melts with some shortening, following the same process as you did with the white chocolate.
Transfer the melted candy into a freezer bag and set aside while you repeat the process with the red candy melts.
Decorate. Snip a corner off of the pink mixture and drizzle over the popcorn. Repeat with the red mixture.
While the melted candy is still wet, add the Valentine’s Day sprinkles. Let cool completely before breaking into pieces for serving.
Such a fun Valentine’s Day treat!
Notes and Adaptations:
- Feel free to include other candies, sprinkles, or add-ins into the mix for this tasty treat! You could add conversation hearts, red hots, Valentine’s Day M&Ms, etc. You could also add in pretzel sticks for a salty sweet snack. Either way, it will be a huge hit!
- Leftovers of the popcorn mix should be stored in an airtight container.
Recommended Equipment:
- Microwave-safe bowls
- Wax paper
- Baking sheets
- Cellophane bags for gifting
- Valentine sprinkles <–this variety pack is so fun!
Valentine's Day Sweetheart Popcorn
This fun and festive sweetheart popcorn is the perfect snack for Valentine's Day!
Ingredients
- 6 to 8 cups popped popcorn (salted and buttered, if desired)
- 12-oz white baking chips
- 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons vegetable shortening (or coconut oil), divided
- ½ cup bright pink candy melts
- ½ cup red candy melts
- Valentine’s Day sprinkles
Instructions
- Line two baking sheets with waxed paper. Spread the popped popcorn evenly over the paper.
- Place the white chocolate chips and 1 Tablespoon of vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well, then continue to microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until the mixture is nice and smooth.
- Drizzle the melted white chocolate over the popcorn, then toss the popcorn to coat it well.
- Spread the popcorn back into an even layer and allow it to cool completely. Once cooled, break apart any large chunks of popcorn.
- Add the bright pink candy melts and 1 teaspoon of vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute. Stir well, then microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring in between, until mixture is smooth.
- Transfer this mixture into a zip-top freezer bag (I like to use a drinking glass to hold the bag while pouring in the melted chocolate). Set aside.
- Add the red candy melts and 1 teaspoon of vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute. Stir well, then microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring in between, until mixture is smooth.
- Transfer this mixture into a zip-top freezer bag (I like to use a drinking glass to hold the bag while pouring in the melted chocolate). Set aside.
- Working with the pink mixture first, snip a corner of the freezer bag with scissors. Drizzle the melted coating over the popcorn.
- Repeat with the red mixture, drizzling over the popcorn.
- Before the candy melts cool and set, sprinkle the popcorn with the Valentine's Day sprinkles.
- Allow the coating to cool completely so it hardens (you can pop the baking sheets into the fridge to speed up this process, if needed).
- Break apart into pieces and serve, or transfer to treat bags if giving as Valentine's gifts.
Notes
- Feel free to include other candies or sprinkles into the mix! You could add conversation hearts, red hots, Valentine's Day M&Ms, etc.
