Growing up in the South, green beans have always been one of my favorite vegetables.
I could just eat them straight out of the can!
Not only that, but they’ve always been one of my favorite foods at our church’s potluck dinners.
There was never a shortage of green beans at those dinners, but one of my favorite types was the slow cooked southern style green beans.
So good!
If you’re not familiar with this type of green beans, they’re super tender beans cooked low and slow, usually with plenty of flavor from bacon (or ham), onions and garlic.
Cooking Frozen Green Beans Southern Style
While I love southern style green beans, I don’t often cook them that way since it takes so long.
That is, until I decided to prepare them in the Instant Pot.
The result was perfection!
Cook Time for Green Beans in the Electric Pressure Cooker
These green beans cook up in a 25 minute cook time, which is much shorter than letting them simmer on the stove top or in a crock pot.
Now technically, the green beans will cook in just a few minutes. But I cook them longer so they get really tender and flavorful.
It’s such an easy side dish for a weeknight meal, or for your next holiday gathering!
They’re great for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter!
Enjoy these, friends!
These are delicious served alongside my baked turkey and dumplings casserole!
How to Make Pressure Cooker Green Beans:
It’s really easy to make these green beans. You’ll just combine everything in the Instant Pot!
Cook them at high pressure for 25 minutes, then perform a quick release of pressure.
You can remove the bacon after cooking, if desired. Add some salt and pepper to taste, if needed!
Notes and Variations for Cooking Green Beans in the Pressure Cooker:
- Feel free to double the recipe if you need more than 4 servings. You can double it as long as you’re using a 6-quart pressure cooker or larger, or as long as you aren’t exceeding the max fill line.
- You can use frozen or fresh green beans.
- Short on time? Use frozen diced onions or frozen pearl onions so you can skip the chopping.
- Adjust the seasonings to your taste.
- No Instant Pot? These can be made in the slow cooker as well. Add all ingredients, plus an extra cup of broth, to a small slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, stirring once or twice during cooking.
Recommended Equipment for Making Pressure Cooker Green Beans:
- Instant Pot (I have the DUO60 model and love it!) or another electric pressure cooker
- Chef’s knife

Southern Style Green Beans in the Instant Pot or Slow Cooker
These southern style pressure cooker green beans taste like they've simmered for hours. Tender, flavorful green beans cooked in the Instant Pot make a quick and easy side for your holiday dinners!
Ingredients
- 12-oz frozen green beans
- 3 strips of uncooked bacon
- 1 medium sweet yellow onion, diced (or 1 cup frozen pearl onions)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 Tbs butter
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Pressure Cooker Instructions:
1. Add all ingredients to the insert pot of the Instant Pot.
2. Close the lid and set the vent to the "sealed" position.
3. Using the manual setting, program a 25 minute cook time at high pressure.
4. Once the cook time is complete, turn off the pressure cooker and perform a quick pressure release.
5. Remove bacon strips if desired.
6. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.
Slow Cooker Directions:
1. Add all ingredients (plus one extra cup of broth) into a small slow cooker. Cover with lid.
2. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, stirring once or twice during cooking.
Notes
- This recipe as written makes enough green beans for about 4 servings. Feel free to double the recipe as long as you are using at least a 6-quart pressure cooker. I have not tried doubling the recipe in a smaller pressure cooker, so just be sure you aren't exceeding the maximum fill of your model if you're planning to double the recipe in a smaller model.
- Frozen green beans are what I used (that's what I most often have on hand), but feel free to substitute fresh green beans if you prefer or if you have them on hand. I recommend keeping the cook time the same.
- If you want to save a couple minutes of prep time, you can use frozen diced onions or frozen pearl onions instead of taking the time to dice an onion yourself.
- Feel free to adjust the seasonings. You can omit the garlic, substitute ham instead of bacon, use seasoned salt, garlic pepper, etc.
- Green beans actually cook in much less time in the pressure cooker (typically just a few minutes or less), but the extended cook time of 25 minutes is to allow the flavors to really meld together and for the beans to get good and soft, giving them that consistency of having simmered all day.
